Department of education, Training & Outreach

More than 23,000 adults and children benefit from the Women’s Center education and training programs annually. With the exception of a few corporate trainings, all programs are free.

Our programs are provided to a wide range of audiences, from pre-school children to senior citizens. The Center customizes these programs to suit the age group and special interests of the particular audience. In-service training is also provided to law enforcement and medical professionals to ensure that they are informed about and sensitive to issues concerning domestic violence and sexual assault.

Our curricula are designed to reach these goals:

  • Reduce the risk of victimization
  • Prevent perpetration of abuse
  • Build personal and environmental factors that protect an individual from ever developing the vulnerability to become a victim or perpetrator of abuse (primary prevention)
  • Address the societal roots of violence
  • For professionals, ensure sensitive response to victims, increase collaboration with the community safety net of victim services, and reduce service provider vicarious traumatization
  • Parent and community adult trainings can be sponsored by the school or PTA. We also offer them to community organizations, places of worship, service clubs, corporations and any gathering of individuals interested in our issues.
  • All educators are certified domestic violence and sexual assault counselors in accordance with CGS 52-146k. This gives our programs the added benefits, when necessary, of responding immediately to individual participants who are victims and facilitating a smooth transition for continuing services at our agency.

All curricula can be modified to meet specific needs. If a program does not currently exist, please contact us. We welcome the opportunity to create new programs.
